Spotlight on ASME to Bestow Gas Turbine Award at Turbo Expo 2013
Spotlight on ASME to Bestow Gas Turbine Award at Turbo Expo 2013 Spotlight on ASME to Bestow Gas Turbine Award at Turbo Expo 2013 Thomas Sattelmayer Thomas Sattelmayer, Dr.-Ing., Georg Martin Baumgartner, and Christian Eichler, Dr.-Ing., have been selected as this year's recipients of the ASME Gas Turbine Award, which is presented annually for outstanding contributions to the literature of combustion gas turbines or gas turbines thermally combined with nuclear or steam power plants. The award recognizes Sattelmayer, Baumgartner and Eichler for a paper they co-authored titled Experimental Investigation of Turbulent Boundary Layer Flashback Limits for Premixed Hydrogen-Air Flames Confined in Ducts. Conferral of the Gas Turbine Award will take place during opening session of ASME Turbo Expo 2013, June 3, at the San Antonio Convention Center, San Antonio, Texas. Turbo Expo runs through June 7. Dr. Sattelmayer resides in Erding, Germany, and is chair for thermodynamics at Lehrstuhl für Thermodynamik, Technische Universitt München (TUM). An ASME member, he serves as chair of the ASME International Gas Turbine Institute (IGTI) and is a member of the IGTI Board. He also served as an associate editor of the ASME Journal of Engineering for Gas Turbines and Power. Sattelmayer earned his Dipl.-Ing and Dr.-Ing. in mechanical engineering from the Karlsruhe Universitt, Germany, in 1980 and 1985, respectively. Georg Martin Baumgartner Baumgartner is a resident of Munich, Germany and is a Dr.-Ing. candidate at the Lehrstuhl für Thermodynamik of the Technische Universitt München (TUM). He studied aeronautical engineering at TUM, where he specialized in lightweight structures and smart structures as well as flight propulsion and fluid machinery. Currently, his research topic deals with safe and reliable premixed combustion of hydrogen-rich fuels. Since October 2012, Baumgartner has been serving as one of four student leaders of the newly established IGTI/ASME Student Advisory Committee. Christian Eichler Dr. Eichler is also a resident of Munich and is a research and development engineer in the heat transfer/combustion department of MTU Aero Engines. He earned his Dipl.-Ing. in aerospace engineering with distinction from the Universitt Stuttgart, Germany, in 2007. Eichler's doctoral work at the Technische Universitt München (TUM) focused on flame flashback in premixed combustion devices with emphasis on hydrogen-containing fuels. The IGTI Combustion Fuels and Emissions Committee recognized Dr. Eichler with a Best Technical Paper Award in 2011. Now in its 58th year, ASME Turbo Expo is recognized as the must-attend event for turbomachinery professionals. Turbo Expo features a five-day technical conference that sets the world standard for turbine technology events and a three-day premium exhibition of turbine products and services supported by leading companies in the industry.
